Discord GIF Requirements & Guidelines
Verified against official Discord documentation as of September 18, 2026.
File Size: Under 256 KB
Official Discord guidelines require custom animated emojis to be under 256 KB. Discord recommends uploading images sized at 128×128 pixels, which Discord automatically scales down for chat rendering.
Our preset applies a 250,000-byte target (leaving safety margin) and 128×128 fit.
Why Might a Compressed GIF Still Fail to Upload to Discord?
- Server Permissions: You must have the "Manage Emojis and Stickers" permission on the Discord server to add custom emojis.
- Emoji Slot Limits: Unboosted servers have a limit of 50 animated emoji slots. If all slots are full, new uploads will fail regardless of file size.
- File Name Restrictions: Discord emoji names must be at least 2 characters long and only contain alphanumeric characters and underscores.
- Transparency Issues: Emojis with corrupted color tables may render with black artifacts. Check transparent edges and animation transitions in the preview.
